Hello! Would love to work with you on the sad story of Senator Tutwiller, and his role in the Great Aroostook Potato Exchange Debacle. In awe of your illustrations! SEE BELOW:
Houlton Gazette (Aroostook County) Maine – (May 1853)
A grievous end today to the great Aroostook potato exchange, set into operation nine months last by young financial wizard Kefuaver F. tutwiller, IV of Bangor.
Mr. Tutwiller convinced most of the populace of Houlton and outlying farms to participate in his potato exchange, as a way of easing commerce. The stores of potatoes were expected to be kept fast, at a secret location in the shed behind the inn on Joy Street.
Alas, Tutwiller sorely failed to keep his shed in good repair! Potatoes were feasted upon by both winged and crawling insects. In addition, Mr. Raymond Pelletier’s hound Felix, a known lover of raw potato, broke in multiple times, making off with dozens of the vegetable.
Upon learning of the ruin and depredation of their potato assets, the good people of Houlton ran Tutwiller out of town, facing him down with an assortment of scythes, pitchforks & other farm implements.
